A colony of 7,500 elephant seals (each one weighing as much as 5,000 pounds) has gathered to bellow, squawk and show off for visitors. You'll find them at Piedras Blancas Rookery on the ocean side of California Highway 1, seven miles north of San Simeon. -- Peter Fish
The winter months are the best. In January and February, the male Elephant Seals battle each other, trying to achieve dominance. It is a spectacular sight to behold.
Other Good Locations for Viewing
I don't think that you can find Elephant Seals anyplace in the United States, other than the above location. They gather in at least two other spots, but neither is accessible (such as uninhabited islands off the coast).
